- Use the most energy efficient light bulbs available, this can result in considerable savings and reduce unnecessary waste from old and inefficient bulbs - Implement a switch off campaign for lights and office equipment for the end of the working day - Use natural light over artificial lights during daylight hours - Turn the heating down by one degree, this will go unnoticed and will help to reduce gas and electric bills - If your heating system has an automatic timer, use it. Set the heater to come on when needed and to turn off when no longer required (for instance at weekends and Bank Holidays if the premises are empty) Supply Chain and Reducing Waste - Buy local produce to reduce transportation miles and unnecessary emissions, this also helps to boost your local economy - Set environmental requirements for suppliers and contractors to ensure a more environmentally sustainable supply chain - Get rid of paper/plastic cups for water dispensers encourage the use of refillable water bottles - Remove personal bins at each desk/workspace and centralise waste and recycling systems Printing and Office Supplies - Purchase recycled paper and green office stationary - Implement default double sided printing - Setup a printer friendly email signature for all staff. “Please consider the environment before printing this email.” - Store your documents on a USB or The Cloud that can be easily accessed on computers or mobile devices instead of relying on paper copies Transport - Encourage cycling to work by providing subsidies for staff who use bikes and facilities (lockers, bike racks, showers) for cyclists - Implement a car pool scheme for staff, or offer to cover some public transport expenses to lessen the amount of your staff who drive to work -Ensure that venues for meetings, conferences and training events are fully accessible by public transport |
